What is NLP?
NLP is short for Neuro-linguistic Programming. It is a way of reprogramming your mind to eliminate problems and create solutions. There are many definitions for it, but think of NLP as a type of interactive hypnosis that utilizes the unconscious and your conscious mind.
I was originally introduced to NLP by Tony Robbins.I watched him cure a woman’s lifelong trauma in about 15 minutes. I then learned how to do that directly from Tony and then received intensive training from several of the originators of NLP, including Richard Bandler and Robert Dilts.
How does Neuro-linguistic Programming Work?
NLP works by presupposing that a problem is made up of a thought pattern – that is often unconscious. These thought patterns consist of elements of our internal world – the images and movies we make in our mind, our self-talk, and our feelings.
When someone is having a problem, I work with the client to identify those internal elements – like negative self-talk, or dark movies of some worrisome future event that may go wrong. Then we can literally reprogram them – by changing them to more positive self-talk, and brighter, happier images and movies in the mind.
An Example:
Someone who had a traumatic event happen, and may have been diagnosed with PTSD, will often replay a movie of that event in their mind over and over again. They do not do it consciously – it just happens. And that reinforces the traumatic feelings.
We would identify that movie and change it, resolving the issue. That is why with NLP and Hypnosis we can resolve an issue like that so quickly – because we change that movie they are playing over and over, and that changes the negative feelings. We go to the cause of the problem, rather than treating the symptom.

Thought Viruses
Think of a problem – like binge eating, or a phobia, or a lack of motivation – as a virus in the mind. Think of it like a computer virus. A computer virus is a piece of code on your computer that creates a problem for your computer. It may slow down the performance, and it may affect other programs that are running. When you remove the virus, you have eliminated the problem and the computer operates faster and better. With Neuro-linguistic Programming, we help you identify and change those thought viruses in your mind, and install better ways of thinking and feeling about things. We help you literally reprogram your mind.
Building Blocks of Success
NLP focuses on your nervous system – your brain and your five senses to detect what is causing the problem and what will create a solution.
Everything you’ve ever experienced came in through your five senses and is stored in your unconscious mind. These are the building blocks of a Neuro Linguistic Program. Our minds consist of many different programs—or sets of sequences of thoughts, whether through images, sensations, or sounds—that cause us to react to certain things in certain ways.
For example, someone with a fear of snakes might think of a snake as really big in their mind – and coming to bite them! This is a set of sequences in their mind that causes fear and possibly panic when seeing or just thinking about a snake. In contrast, somebody who doesn’t have a phobia of snakes might see in their mind’s eye something smaller and further away, creating a calmer or more neutral feeling around it. We help people change it from the first program to the second one – and remove the unnecessary fear.
Performance Improvement
With NLP we rearrange these building blocks to eliminate problems, and to increase performance. While NLP has many therapeutic applications for resolving problems, there are also techniques to improve performance. People often seek out an NLP practitioner for improving sports or academic performance, improving one-on-one communication skills, becoming a better public speaker, or improving job interview performance.

Note that most people come into my office in San Jose to experience NLP in person, but I also work with people over video conferencing all over the world. My office is in West San Jose, near the borders of Cupertino, Sunnyvale, and Santa Clara. It is less than a 15 minute drive from nearby cities like Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Milpitas, Palo Alto, and Mountain View.
What to Look For in an NLP Practitioner
While NLP is powerful, and the very basics can be learned without a large investment in training, it is important to find someone who has a lot of training and experience working with deeper issues. That is why I decided to get the highest level of certification possible – NLP Health-Certified Master Practitioner. I have assisted at world-class NLP Health Certification courses, and am also a certified NLP Trainer. I have trained NLP for national audiences and have had successful case studies published in the book “Powerful Questions and Techniques for Coaches and Therapists.”
