So you hit a threshold and decide “that’s it – I’m going to finally stop those bad eating and exercise habits and lose weight now.”
And that’s where the problem comes in: Most people will then jump all-in to try to lose weight by starving themselves and stressing their body with too much exercise too soon. So they proceed to throw all the food in their house away, starve themselves, and force themselves to overexert themselves anyway – because it should work. It feels bad in the moment, but people still do it with the hope that they can finally hit that weight loss goal.
The reason that most people don’t experience long-term weight loss is because of this kind of All-or-Nothing (AoN) thinking. It requires a lot of willpower to keep it up, and eventually you will crash out of it before you can reach your weight loss goal. So you go back to your old habits – only to try again weeks, months, or even years later. This pattern of extreme measures is what causes yo-yo dieting – and it never leads to long-term weight loss.

Why Diets Don’t Work
I’ve been following dieting and weight loss trends for over 20 years. Back in 1998 when I started researching weight loss, the big trend was The Atkins Diet. Over the years I have seen a lot of fad diets come and go – all without success for most people. I see the same thing today with the Keto Diet that’s currently the rage. For most people, if they lose some weight while on a diet – they gain it right back.
The same issue is true for exercise trends – whether it is boot camps or trying to spend two hours in the gym every day. Most people approach an exercise program from an extreme All or-Nothing attitude that is unsustainable.
The reason diets and boot camps don’t work for most people is that they are All-or-Nothing approaches, and are doomed to fail. That is why 95% of all diets fail in a year. Longer-term the statistics are just as grim. Studies show that 96% of people will gain back all the weight
they lost within five years.
And the other issue is that weight loss is not about behaviors for most people. Most people know what they should eat, what they should not eat, and that they should exercise. But it is not a matter of knowledge. It is about unconscious patterns related to food, exercise, and often self-worth. That is why it is common for people to jump from diet to diet and never permanently lose weight – because it is not about learning a new behavior. Hypnosis can more than double the effects of traditional weight loss approaches
An analysis of five weight loss studies reported in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology in 1996 showed that the “… weight loss reported in the five studies indicates that hypnosis can more than double the effects” of traditional weight loss approaches.

Hypnosis Over 30 Times as Effective for Weight Loss
Investigated the effects of hypnosis in weight loss for 60 females, at least 20% overweight. Treatment included group hypnosis with metaphors for egostrengthening, decision making and motivation, ideomotor exploration in individual hypnosis, and group hypnosis with maintenance suggestions. Hypnosis was more effective than a control group: an average of 17 lbs lost by the hypnosis group vs. an average of 0.5 lbs lost by the control group, on follow-up.

Two Years Later: Hypnosis Subjects Continued To Lose Significant Weight
109 people completed a behavioral treatment for weight management either with or without the addition of hypnosis. At the end of the 9-week program, both interventions resulted in significant weight reduction. At 8-month and 2-year follow-ups, the hypnosis subjects were found to have continued to lose significant weight, while those in the behavioral-treatment-only group showed little further change.

Hypnosis Showed Significantly Lower PostTreatment Weights
Two studies compared overweight smoking and nonsmoking adult women in a hypnosis-based, weightloss program. Both achieved significant weight losses and decreases in Body Mass Index. Followup study replicated significant weight losses and declines in Body Mass Index. The overt aversion and hypnosis program yielded significantly lower posttreatment weights and a greater average number of pounds lost.
